A Oficina da Formiga nasceu em 1992 com a cobertura da eira da nossa casa gandaresa de 1915, em Ílhavo, e a instalação do forno e das bancadas de pintura manual.
Fruto da influência de mestres e técnicos, da experimentação artesanal, da experiência na direcção industrial e também como formador no sector cerâmico, demos continuidade à reprodução dos motivos e das cores ainda registadas na nossa memória, mas que há muito desapareceram dos nossos ambientes familiares.
Os nossos clientes e amigos voltaram a colocar nas mesas do dia-a-dia, ou em ocasiões de festa, a travessa com o bacalhau, batatas e couves, o prato com as rabanadas, aletria ou arroz doce, a taça com a salada de alface, a tijela com a marmelada, ou utilizando-as simplesmente como peças decorativas.
As peças da Oficina da Formiga são reproduções fieis dos formatos e motivos de louça utilitária, fabricadas na segunda metade do século XIX e primeira metade do século XX provenientes de diversas unidades industriais nacionais que já encerraram, nomeadamente de Aveiro, Coimbra, Lisboa, Sacavém, Caldas da Rainha e Gaia.
São objectos utilitários que dão resposta às necessidades quotidianas (louça para alimentos e refeições), mas, na sua utilização, podemos voltar a capturar as memórias maravilhosas das olarias populares.
Algumas peças são carregadas de simbolismo – como é o caso do prato da abundância – e são pedaços da história popular que não queremos deixar perder.
Os motivos são baseados nos elementos naturais e tradicionais, peixes, aves, flores e folclore, rebuscados em casas particulares, antiquários, feiras de velharias, livros e museus. As formas são, principalmente, os pratos, travessas, jarras e bacias. Os processos de conformação, pintura e vidragem são manuais, com as mesmas técnicas usadas desde o século XIX.

OF Ceramics was born in 1992 with coverage of the threshingfloor of our “gandaresa” house from 1915, in Ílhavo, and after the kiln and the manual painting worktops installation.
Result of the influence of masters and technicians, the craft experimentation, experience in industrial management and as a trainer in the ceramic sector, we continued the reproduction of patterns and colors, still registered in our memory, but which have long since disappeared from our familiar surroundings.
Our customers and friends put again on the tables of the day-to-day, or on occasions of celebration, the platter with cod, potatoes and cabbages, the plate with traditional sweets, sweet pasta or rice, the bowl with salad lettuce, the bowl with jam, or simply using them as decorative pieces.
Hand painted pottery and plates is one of the oldest traditions in Portugal. It dates from the 16th century when a ceramic paste was experimented with and then used to make white pottery pieces for domestic uses.
Then these plates were painted with original designs and motifs. They were produced in quantity from the 19th century through the 1960’s in the coastal region of Portugal.
Today, this kind of handicraft is reproduced with the same designs and recovered and uses others provenient of the rich portuguese painted tiles.
The traditional designs are based on the three natural elements: SEA, EARTH, AIR; or, the fishes, the roosters and the flowers, and the birds. Some of the designs date from well over 100 years and are from unknown artists, thus called folk designs.
These handpainted and decorated pieces are principally in the form of plates and either oval or eight sided platters. The predominant colours are blue, green, rose, brown and yellow and are all high fired. And the glaze used could be crackle or utilitarian. The bisque and the glaze firing temperature is near 1050º C.
